October social is on at the Guv’nor!!

Good afternoon everyone!!

I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend and that none of us suffered any ill effects from all that rain and wind yesterday!

If you are all turkeyed out maybe you will want to join your colleagues for some Thursday night pub grub at the Guv’nor!  Yes, the votes are in and the majority of respondents have voted for the Guv’nor so a reservation has been made for 6:00 Thursday  October 13 in the name of NLHLA.  Wish I could see you there, but have a wonderful evening!

 Kim Hancock

We narrowed it down to possible restaurants which are listed below with the links so that you can have a look at the menus:

  1. The St. John’s Fish Exchange
  2. https://sjfx.ca/
  3. The Gov-nor
  4. http://theguvnor.ca/dine/

Could you respond to the Survey monkey request to indicate which restaurant would be your preference?

BBQ Social

Hi everyone,

The end of summer is coming upon us quickly. We thought it might be nice to have a get together and discuss some of the things you would like to see happen in the next year. Please join us for a BBQ at Alison’s house on August 31st at 5:30. We will supply hot dogs and hamburgers. Please bring a salad or side dish. For details on location please see the email sent on August 24. Another email will be sent Monday, August 29th. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Alison

Our new VP, and a BBQ social

Hi Everyone,

I’m very pleased to announce Kim Hancock as our chapter Vice-President/President Elect.  Thank you, Kim, for volunteering to serve!

It’s time for another social, don’t you think?  We do!  So on Wednesday, August 31st, we’re having an after-work BBQ in Mount Pearl.  Alison’s agreed to host and we’ll get burgers and hot dogs on the grill for everyone; just bring a side dish or dessert to share.  Please mark it on your calendars and I’ll send more details as the date approaches.

This is in addition to the social on Thursday, October 13, so keep that date reserved, too.

Looking forward to seeing you,

Shannon

Post-conference Update

I want to express my gratitude to all of this year’s conference presenters.  We had a full and varied program, and an excellent turnout from our membership.  Thank you to our keynote speaker, Crystal Rose, and to everyone who helped to make the day a success.  To help us keep building on that success, we need to hear from you.  What stood out to you as highlights?  What did we do this year that we should do again?  Help us to choose a direction for focussing our efforts by completing this brief survey.

We have a vacancy in the 2016-2017 executive.  This is an opportunity for you to step forward and help guide NLHLA.  As Vice President/President-Elect, you are in charge of communications (emails, web posts) and helping to plan the annual conference.  If you are interested in being Vice President/President Elect, please email me by Tuesday, July 5.

Last of all, please save the date for Thursday, October 13th.  Details to follow!

Thank you,

Shannon

Helpful Pre-Conference Details

To see conference details, please click on the Events tab and select 2016 Conference.  There, in addition to the day’s schedule, you will find:

  • directions to Southcott Hall of the Centre for Nursing Studies
  • a parking map (remember, parking is limited)
  • the luncheon menu from Bally Haly Country Club

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask Shannon.  See you all tomorrow!

Call For Papers

Submissions for this year’s NLHLA Conference are now open.

Submission Deadline:  Thursday, March 31st.

We welcome submission on a wide range of topics; building on the success of the previous year’s format, we’re not limiting presentations to a particular theme.  You may have a project you’d like to share, a concern or issue arising from everyday practice, or see an emerging trend to discuss.  Whatever it is that interests you will be of interest to your colleagues, too.

Choose one of the following options for presenting to the group:

  • Full presentation:  20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions/arising discussion
  • Lightning Round presentation: 5-10 minutes total.  Consider this an opportunity to share work-in-progress and gather feedback from your colleagues.

To submit, please send your abstracts (1-2 paragraphs) to Shannon McAlorum, and indicate if you prefer to be allotted time for a Full or Lightning Round presentation.

December Social

Let’s get together!

The NLHLA executive is hoping you’ll be able to join us for dinner at Red Rock Bar & Grill (686 Topsail Rd.) on Thursday, December 3 at 6:00pm.

Thanks to all who have already expressed interest in coming. Everyone else, please RSVP to Michelle (mswab@mun.ca) by Monday, November 30 so we can make a reservation.

Looking forward to seeing you there,

Shannon McAlorum
Vice-President/President Elect
